ADR 88: Electronic Stability Control

Electronic stability control evidence needs to relate to the actual vehicle and its system configuration.

Check applicability first

The vehicle category, build information, approval pathway and proposed configuration need to be identified before selecting an applicable edition. Use the official catalogue and legislation; the latest published edition is not automatically the right edition for every existing vehicle.

Treat ESC as a vehicle system

ADR 88 addresses electronic stability control systems. An enquiry should identify the vehicle and any changes relevant to its configuration. A dashboard indicator or the presence of a control unit is not a substitute for evidence covering the applicable requirement.

Connect the evidence to the configuration

Send the vehicle make, model, year and variant, along with existing technical records and a description of proposed changes. Where an approval or report is available, identify its vehicle coverage. This helps determine whether the question is about applicability, evidence coverage or a configuration change.

Common questions

No. Its variant coverage, configuration and relationship to the proposed vehicle need to be established first.

Tell us what you need

Send the vehicle make, model and year or range, the component details, or a short engineering brief. If you are unsure about the technical pathway, tell us the outcome you want.
