3D Scanning, CAD and FEA: Which Do You Need?

Choose the starting service by the question you need answered and the information you already have.

3D scanning: what geometry exists?

Scanning records accessible surfaces of a physical object. It can provide geometry for packaging, comparison or reconstruction. Define the important features and intended accuracy. A surface mesh is a data output; it is not automatically a fully editable design model.

CAD: what should be made?

CAD defines geometry and assemblies for a chosen purpose. It may begin from a sketch, design brief, drawing or captured part. Agree the required model and drawing deliverables, interfaces and manufacturing information so the output can be used downstream.

FEA: how does the model behave?

Finite element analysis investigates a defined model under stated assumptions. It needs credible geometry, materials, loads and restraints, along with a criterion for interpreting the result. A detailed colour plot alone does not answer whether the inputs represent the real part.

Combine services only where useful

An existing part might need scanning, reconstruction in CAD and then analysis of a proposed change. A new concept may start directly in CAD. Tell us the decision you need to make; the scope should include the work that advances that decision and identify any inspection or test evidence still required.

What to send first

Send a short description of the item, photos or drawings, approximate dimensions, available files and how you intend to use the result. Include known tolerances, materials and loads where relevant, and mark missing technical information as unknown.

Tell us what you need

Send the vehicle make, model and year or range, the component details, or a short engineering brief. If you are unsure about the technical pathway, tell us the outcome you want.
