Check applicability first
The vehicle category, build information, approval pathway and proposed configuration need to be identified before selecting an applicable edition. Use the official catalogue and legislation; the latest published edition is not automatically the right edition for every existing vehicle.
Choose the right starting standard
ADR 79 addresses emission control for light vehicles and ADR 80 addresses heavy vehicles. Edition and applicability provisions matter. Avoid assuming that a rule number or a broad overseas emissions label settles the Australian approval question for an identified vehicle.
Identify the powertrain and records
Include the vehicle and engine identification, fuel type, build year or range, original market and any powertrain or emissions-system changes. If you have test reports or manufacturer information, send the complete records and identify the configuration they cover. Unknown details can be recorded for follow-up rather than guessed.
Common questions
Does an overseas emissions label prove Australian compliance?
It is an input to review. The relevant Australian requirement, edition, vehicle configuration and evidence coverage still need to be established.
